The Torch, Glenbrook North High School’s student newspaper, competed in the Northern Illinois Scholastic Press Association’s 2009 Newspaper Contest. The Torch earned the Golden Eagle Award for Overall Excellence and a Gold Certificate for Excellence in Journalism. Out of a possible 400 points, Torch earned 393 points, tallying perfect scores in the following categories: News, In-Depth, Feature, Editorials, Columns/Reviews, Photography, Overall Appearance, Inside Page Design, Special Page Design, and Advertising.
The Torch also received numerous individual awards. Katie Artemas earned the Honorable Mention Award for Excellence in Journalism in the News Writing category. Kara Brandeisky earned the following:
Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence in Journalism in the Editorial Cartoon category; Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence in Journalism in the Team In-Depth category;Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence in Journalism in the Editorial Writing category; Honorable Mention Award for Excellence in Journalism in the Advertising Design category. Kara Brandeisky is the Torch editor in chief and Katie Artemas is the managing editor.
In addition, Laura Carrillo earned the Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence in Journalism in the Feature Writing category. Katie Garrity earned the Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence in Journalism in the Feature Writing category. Alyssa Goodman earned the Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence in Journalism in the Photography category. Nick Jones earned the Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence in Journalism in the Column Writing category. Molly Leigner earned the Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence in Journalism in the Team In-Depth category. Jack Preis earned the Honorable Mention Award for Excellence in Journalism in the Sports Writing category.
